When I read this headline, it struck a major cord in my mind. Israel in it’s very limited time in existence as a nation has managed to escape signing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty. Israel has also managed to gain a nuclear arsenal despite being the only mideast power to acquire such weaponry.

In a world where Iran and other nations have been under the most intense international scrutiny over it’s suspected nuclear weapons program for carrying out measures that are actually deemed acceptable by the international standards set forth by the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, Israel is now being looked at as a major possible roadblock to the summit before it is scheduled to take place.

In today’s world where the middle east is so unstable, a nation that is backed by the United States on nearly any issue and will no doubt be defended militarily in virtually any scenario, it is irresponsible to not place this subject into the proper context. The United States defends Israel by telling Arab nations, including Iran, that singling out Israel could be a threat to the summit is almost gut bursting laughable.

Here we have the world on the verge of economic collapse, and it is nearly spectacular that we will at least have a summit of this type, yet the only mideast nuclear power has yet to rise to the international standard for the nuclear neighborhood. This is equally confusing when we see Iran, that has time and again cooperated with the U.N., and only taking measures that are allowed for in the international treaty. has been singled out in was has to be the century’s pinnacle of ironic hypocrisy.

The fact that Arab states and Iran have made this statement openly and in unison, has to place some pressure on the United States to at least have this topic as a possibility at a mideast summit on nuclear proliferation. To ignore this fact is not only dangerous, but it undermines the entire context of the summit.

How can Nations that are constantly placed under pressure with regard to nuclear weapons ignore this issue at exactly the right time and in the right forum be pressured to drop the issue under threat of an American walkout if the issue is raised? What the hell kind of politics is this?

In my opinion, the fact that Israel is threatening to bomb another sovereign nation over a suspected nuclear program is exactly the reason that the issue should be discussed with more urgency than any perceived Iranian nuclear threat. Case by case, Israel and even the United States have ratcheted up the rhetoric of an airstrike if necessary to deter Iranian moves toward nuclear weapons capability. Israel has nuclear arms and is the only aggressor in the region.

The United States has essentially committed an act of war in a breach of the treaty by placing economic sanctions on Iran, as defined in the very same treaty Israel refuses to sign. How can our arguments and political positions carry any weight when we so easily turn a blind eye to the way the World has ignored the issue altogether. If we are threatening military action against Iran, surely this issue is not only valid, but requires the United states to address it to retain any international credibility at the summit.
